Cars have long been tested mostly using dummies built to look like men, even though women drive just as much. The new dummy introduced by the government finally “resembles women” more closely — with changes in pelvis shape, neck and collarbone measurements, and 150+ sensors tracking data.

This update matters because research shows women are significantly more likely to be seriously injured or killed in car crashes when safety testing relies on male‐shaped models. With the new dummy, automakers may begin designing cars that offer better protection for everyone.
