Vacuum tube computers of the mid twentieth century marked the first leap into fully electronic calculation. These early machines, including ENIAC and UNIVAC, relied on thousands of glowing glass tubes to switch currents and process data at unprecedented speeds for their time. Though bulky, hot, and maintenance heavy, they enabled complex wartime calculations, census tabulation, and scientific research. Their architecture laid the groundwork for the transistor revolution that soon followed.
