Hotel de Chillicothe documents an ensemble thinking collectively rather than hierarchically. Distributed Assembly Octet works through accumulation and restraint, allowing eight distinct voices to occupy shared space without forcing convergence. The music unfolds as a series of negotiated balances, with density and openness held in careful tension. Lines overlap, recede, and reappear, forming structures that feel provisional yet deliberate.

The octet’s identity is defined less by solo display than by internal listening. Brass and reeds move in parallel currents, rhythm instruments act as stabilizing pressure rather than command, and harmonic material develops through proximity and friction. Nothing here feels decorative. Each sound exists in relation to the others, shaped by awareness of form, weight, and duration.

Artificial intelligence was used as an analytical instrument during the project, assisting in the examination of proportion, ensemble behavior, and large-scale balance. Its role remained subordinate to human judgment, historical understanding, and compositional intent. The result stands as a unified work grounded in early 1960s European jazz practice, attentive to clarity, physical presence, and collective purpose.
